Coaley C of E Primary School - Governors in service – September 2017
Introducing our Governing Body...
Mrs Suzette Kearns - Head Teacher
Gillian Holmes (Chair of Governors)
I am the governor appointed by the Local Authority. I represent the authority but do not reflect a particular political view. My background is teaching. I was Head of music in a large leading edge school which converted to academy status and was the lead school in the trust. Since retiring I still have links with the school, teaching steel bands for 4 hours a week. I have worked with primary school pupils in various musical contexts. I am passionate about education and children’s learning, and believe that all children should be given as many opportunities as possible to flourish and grow.
I am a member of Coaley Church, worshipping there each week, and as such I support the Christian ethos of the school, considering it an important part of school life.
Carole O’Donnell (Vice Chair)
Born and bred in Coaley I now live in Slimbridge. I am an ex pupil of Coaley School and my own four children also attended school at Coaley.
Currently in full time employment, I am also the District Commissioner for Cotswold Vale Scout District, covering Scout Groups in Berkeley, Cam, Dursley, Sharpness, Slimbridge and Wotton under Edge. Our January census shows I have responsibility for 400 young people and 150 adult volunteers. This responsibility covers safeguarding, health and safety and of course an exciting and adventurous programme of activities.
An active member of Coaley Church, I sit on the Parochial Church Council and am currently the Lay Chair for Wotton Deanery Synod and a member of Diocesan Synod. I was nominated by the PCC to be the foundation governor from 1st September this year. I currently organise 3 Messy Church events a year for the church, using my experiences of working with young people to make them inviting and fun. My appointment was confirmed by the Diocesan Education Board who has responsibility for formulating policies which affect all Church schools in the diocese.
Married with three surviving children, I have considerable experience in working with young people, health, safety and safeguarding of our young people and understanding of governance and processes.
I consider myself to be quite a level-headed person, but will not hesitate to challenge where necessary or appropriate.
I am passionate about Coaley School, and will work diligently as your foundation governor to ensure the continuation of the character and Christian ethos of the school and that both young people and adults in the school are valued.
Mrs Jennifer Lowe (Staff Governor)
I have been a governor since: September 2008
Why I am a governor: I am passionate about Coaley Primary School and want to be involved in all aspects of school life.
Mr Bruce Caldwell (Parent Governor)
I am a Parent Governor, having joined in Autumn 2015 when my son joined Early years from the Playgroup. Having lived in Coaley for 61/2 years the school is a vital asset of my village; maintaining a broad age band to the community and therefore a successful one.
I have two more children who will join the school in the next few years so the education that they get is of great importance to us as a family: If they learn from day 1 that learning is fun they will be "switched on" and receptive for the rest of their lives - that's a great foundation on which "The 3 R's" can be built, and my motivation for being part of the team.
I've worked variously in the Environment, Telecoms, House Building and Energy, and now work for a multi-disciplinary consultancy as a Project Manager in Bristol - my commute is 11 miles by car and 13 by bike.
I was lucky enough to work with Bristol University for 3 years, in "youth development" and saw how the young mind is like a sponge for new facts and ideas, if presented in an interesting manner.
When not governing I can occasionally be found in the overgrown allotment at the top of the village; another community aim is to win that back from the jungle, but help is needed!
Mr Richard Morgan (Parent Governor) - Awaiting information- newly appointed.
Reverend Sue Greatorex - ( Ex-Officio Governor)
I have been the vicar of Bartholomew’s Coaley for just about two years. I have been ordained for about 14 years and before I turned my collar round the wrong way I was a SEN teacher specialising in teaching young people with specific learning difficulties and anger management difficulties in mainstream school.
I am passionate about inclusion.
It is a real privilege to be a foundation governor at Coaley school. I am keen to develop links between to church and school and support the school community in any way I can.
Mrs Jacqui Phillips (Additional Governor - Appointed by the LA)
I moved to Gloucestershire in 1992 with my husband and two daughters. I followed them into primary school becoming a parent governor within months of arriving and stayed at the same school for 23 years.
In 1999 I joined a secondary academy school as a governor and have been Chair of Governors from 2001. As well as these first two schools the Local Authority appointed me and as an additional governor or interim executive board member at five other schools over a number of years.
All aspects of governance interest me and I feel passionate about wanting students to be able to access the best available education.
